Central Pennsylvania Spring Plumbing Checklist

Ready to get started? Here’s the top six home maintenance tasks our home comfort professionals at W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. recommend adding to your spring-cleaning checklist this year:

1. Check for leaks

Make sure your home is leak-free. Inspect the areas underneath sinks, behind toilets, and in basements for any signs of leakage. Be sure to head outside to double-check that you don’t have any leaking spigots or faucets. When compounded, small leaks can cause big problems. It’s best to get them taken care of right away by a reputable plumber, like W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc.. W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. is the top choice for professional plumbing services here in Pennsylvania. Small leaks are often simple for our plumbers to fix, preventing them from becoming more severe and costly.

2. Clear out your gutters

Gutters easily fill with leaves, debris, ice, and other blockages. It’s important to clean them or have them cleaned out in the spring to prevent water backup on your roof. Excess water on your roof can lead to leaks, water damage, and other issues that are easily preventable with a simple gutter cleaning.

3. Replace your air filters

A quick, simple, and affordable way to upgrade your home’s indoor air quality is to replace your home’s air filters every 90 days. Dirt, dust, and allergens get caught in your filter so tackling this replacement while you’re checking off your spring-cleaning to-do list is essential!

4. Clean faucets and fixtures

Sink and shower faucets can collect sedimentary buildup of the chemicals that are in our water. Cleaning them means that the buildup won’t eat away at the metal, come off on your skin, or make dishwashing less effective. Scrub off the buildup and consider a replacement if the buildup is too stubborn.

5. Schedule annual maintenance

Furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, and appliances like water pumps and water heaters all need annual maintenance. You can increase efficiency, use less oil, and reduce the risk of a future breakdown by scheduling a yearly tune-up for your home comfort equipment with our W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. professionals today. Contact us online to schedule your appointment today!

When your Harrisburg, PA home has a plumbing problem or you’re looking to get started on your next plumbing project, you may be tempted by the idea of hiring a handyperson or asking for help from a family member or friend. While they may be willing to lend you a hand, you could wind up paying a lot for this decision down the road. The wrong equipment or a lack of experience can ultimately wind up escalating a small issue into a big one, and you’ll wish you had relied on a licensed, insured plumber like the ones at W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc.. Our plumbing experts have the right experience and equipment to complete nearly any plumbing project. Keep reading this blog to learn the top reasons you should go with a licensed and insured plumber from W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. for your plumbing emergency or project.

Top Reasons to Choose a Licensed & Insured Plumber in PA

Qualifications, Knowledge, & Experience

Being a plumber in Pennsylvania requires a license, with licenses issued in local municipalities as opposed to at the state level. All licensed plumbers undergo ongoing training to stay up-to-date with the newest products and technologies, unlike your loved one or someone who isn’t licensed. Our expert plumbers are also aware of things like building codes and will ensure all plumbing work completed in your home follows county and state regulations.

Legal Permission

Not only does a plumbing license certify that a plumber is properly educated and trained, but it also certifies that they are legally allowed to provide plumbing services. Each municipality in Pennsylvania has specific rules and regulations for plumbers; if a handyperson or your uncle couldn’t pass the requirements to get a plumbing license, hiring them is simply not worth the risk to your home and wallet.

Insurance

An unlicensed plumber will also be uninsured, and it’s important to remember that “uninsured” always equals “liability” when it comes to work performed on your property. This means that you’ll be responsible for medical bills and lost wages if your handyman or family member gets injured while working at your home. Also, if something happens to your plumbing system due to the work performed by the uninsured party, it’s likely that your homeowner’s insurance will not cover the cost. By contrast, a licensed plumber from W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. is fully insured and carries liability coverage, so you don’t have to worry about a thing—but it’s always okay to ask for proof of insurance before work begins.

No-Heat Checklist for Homeowners in PA

  • Fuel Tank: Check the gauge on your heating oil or propane tank, if you have run out of fuel call W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. right away.
  • Thermostat: Make sure your setting is on HEAT, and the cooling function is not on instead.
  • Switches: Check that all furnace and emergency switches are on.

If you’ve performed all the above steps and still don’t have heat, call your local heating experts at W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. right away for assistance.

Tips to Prevent Heat-Loss, Fuel Runouts, and Heating Equipment Breakdowns

Know When to Order Fuel

Do you know when the best time to place a fuel order is? If you use heating oil, you should order more when your tank gauge reads no less than ¼ full; if you use propane, order when your tank is no less than 30% full. That gives us time to bring you the fuel you need while helping to avoid a no-heat situation.

Use Propane? Add a Tank Monitor

We highly recommend tank monitors to our propane delivery customers. A tank monitor is a small device that sits on your tank and transmits your remaining fuel level to your smartphone or any other Internet-capable device (like a computer or tablet). You can even set customized tank level alerts.

Sign Up for Automatic Delivery

If you’d rather take the hassle out of your heating and don’t want to call each time you need oil or propane, sign up for our automatic delivery program. With this service, our advanced system keeps track of your heating oil or propane usage for you, delivering fuel to your home automatically when you need it. It’s that simple!

Don’t Skip Your Annual Heating System Tune-Up Service

The best time of year to have this maintenance performed on your oil- or propane-fired equipment is each fall—right before your equipment works its hardest. If there are any issues with your heating system at the time of your maintenance visit, you’ll have time to correct them. But if you haven’t had a tune-up for this heating season, it’s not too late! Schedule this service today by reaching out to us.

Consider an Upgrade

If your heating equipment has seen better days, it may be time for an upgrade. Whether you choose to replace your complete system with a newer, high-efficiency model or to correct parts-related issues found at the time of your tune-up, don’t risk operating old, inefficient, and potentially unsafe equipment for another winter. You can learn more about W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. professional heating installations on our website.

Choose a Full-Service HVAC Provider

Take preventative measures that can save you a fortune but won’t cost you one, like trusting a full-service HVAC provider with your total home comfort. Unlike discount heating oil providers, W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. has the expertise it takes to care for your heating system to ensure it is operating efficiently year after year. There’s no need to settle for the bare minimum when you can get more value for your money by selecting W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. as your full-service fuel and HVAC service provider. Plus, we offer 24/7 emergency service should you ever need it!

Enroll in a Maintenance Plan

While the act of enrolling in a maintenance plan alone won’t help you prevent a heat-out emergency, the services included—like your annual tune-up and discounts on system repairs—will. The better you take care of your heating equipment, the better it will be at keeping your home warm safely and without interruption.

Your Holiday Home To-Do List

Make Sure You Have Enough Fuel

A no-heat scenario due to lack of fuel will not only leave your family cold, but it is also a serious safety hazard. Running out of heating oil or propane can cause costly damage to your heating system, and the last thing anyone wants right before the holidays is an unexpected bill. Avoid this by placing a heating oil delivery when your tank is no less than ¼ full or a or propane delivery when your tank is no less than 30% full. Remember that having guests staying over leads to higher fuel usage from things like hot water for showers and gas for cooking. Simplify your holiday and sign up for automatic delivery—we’ll handle your fueling for you!

Keep Your Driveway Clear

To bring you the fuel you need to keep your home warm and cozy, our delivery drivers need access to your driveway. Please keep your driveway clear of snow and ice and remember to shovel a path to your fill pipe so they can bring your propane or heating oil delivery!

Have a Generator? Make Sure the Tank Is Full

If you rely on a generator to keep your power on during our unpredictable Pennsylvania winters, it’s a good idea to top off its storage tank before the holidays. That way if we experience a holiday storm, you can rest easy knowing you’ll have power.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Leaving town for the holidays? Make sure your thermostat is set low to conserve energy, but not completely shut off. This will help prevent frozen pipes and costly damage to your home.

Keep Your No-Heat Checklist Handy

If you experience heat loss this winter, don’t panic. See if you can correct the issue quickly and safely with this checklist:

What You Should Know About Carbon Monoxide

What is carbon monoxide (CO) and how is it produced?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It is produced by the incomplete burning of various fuels, including coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas. Products and equipment powered by internal combustion engines such as portable generators, cars, lawn mowers, and power washers also produce CO.

What are the symptoms of CO poisoning?

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

What should you do if the CO alarm sounds or you suspect a CO leak?

Never ignore an alarming CO alarm! It is warning you of a potentially deadly hazard. If the alarm signal sounds, do not try to find the source of the CO. Instead, you should:

  1. Immediately move outside to fresh air.
  2. Call the non-emergency number of your local fire department. The fire department will do an air quality test. If carbon monoxide is detected, W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. will respond and inspect the furnace.
  3. After calling your fire department, do a head count to check that all people are accounted for. DO NOT reenter the premises until the emergency service responders have given you permission.
  4. If the source of the CO is determined to be a malfunctioning appliance, DO NOT operate that appliance until it has been properly serviced by trained personnel.

Every year, people across the United States and in Central PA come together to celebrate National Propane Day on October 7. National Propane Day serves to remind us about the great importance of this multipurpose and eco-friendly fuel, which so many Americans rely on to heat and power their homes and appliances.

This safe and versatile fuel can power a wide variety of home appliances—both indoors and outside! If you use propane to heat your home during the fall and winter, then you already understand the benefits of this fuel, with its high efficiency, low cost, and clean-burning properties. Not only is propane useful during the heating season, but it’s also an excellent source for fueling spring and summer outdoor activities and appliances, too.

The Many Benefits and Uses of Propane

There are several unique benefits when it comes to using propane. Almost 90% of the propane used in the United States is produced right here in America – domestically. Therefore, it’s one of the most abundant and reliable fuels, with minimal dependence on foreign suppliers. Additionally, propane is also eco-friendly – as a burned fuel it meets all clean air energy standards put forth by the Environmental Protection Agency. Propane is the most versatile fuel type available for homeowners, and can power several appliances, including:

  • Heat
  • Hot Water
  • Fireplaces
  • Cooking
  • Gas Grills
  • Space Heaters
  • Clothes Drying
  • Electric Generators
  • Pools

Homeowners love choosing propane for all of its beneficial qualities:

  • Energy Efficient
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Easy Care and Operation
  • Ability to Have Gas Appliances
  • Even Warm Heat and Fast Recovery

With the warm summer days finally giving way to cool and more comfortable fall weather in Central Pennsylvania, many homeowners like yourself are brainstorming the best ways to prepare for the upcoming winter during this transitional season. One way to do that is to upgrade your old heating system. Upgrading your current heating system now for a new, energy-efficient, and powerful home boiler or furnace will help you experience a more comfortable winter season once the cold weather is here to stay. Our oil and gas heating experts at W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. are skilled at quickly replacing and upgrading old heating systems for new models. Keep reading to learn the top signs your heating system is due for an upgrade this fall and the primary factors to consider before scheduling your replacement service.

4 Signs Your Heating System Needs Replacement

How did your heating system do last winter? If you have started to worry that your heating system may not make it through another chilly Pennsylvania winter, don’t panic. We outlined a few signs to help you understand if your system needs a replacement. Check out the list below to see if your heating system would benefit from a replacement from our installation experts.

  • Sign #1: Increased fuel usage. As your heating system ages, its efficiency will start to decline. Consistently increased fuel usage (without extreme weather or household size increase) is a clear symptom of decreased fuel economy that could benefit from an upgrade.
  • Sign #2: Foreign sounds or odors. If you start to hear abnormal humming, banging, or clunking from your heating system, it could be time for a replacement. Uncommon odors can be another red flag.
  • Sign #3: Uneven heating from room to room. Although we can predict that heat will rise, and, therefore, your upper floors may be warmer, if heat is not reaching all areas of your home equally, that can indicate the decline of your equipment’s operation capabilities.
  • Sign #4: Repairs needed more frequently. Naturally, your heating equipment will suffer from more breakdowns as the years go by. Instead of spending money on recurring repair visits, you will get more bang for your buck by investing in a new high-efficiency system.

Benefits of Installing New High-Efficiency Heating Equipment

There are many benefits for Pennsylvania homeowners to upgrade to a new oil, propane, or natural gas heating system. With a new, more efficient heating system, homeowners experience more savings and comfort, improved indoor air quality, longer equipment lifespan, and increased resale value for future buyers.

What to Consider for a New Heating Installation in Central Pennsylvania

Have you decided that upgrading your heating system this season is best for you and your family’s Central PA home? The heating installation professionals at W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. are pleased to help you stay warm and comfortable while saving money on energy costs with new heating equipment. But, before you request your installation service with us, consider a few key things to help us understand how to upgrade your total home comfort before the coldest days of fall and winter are here to stay.

Do You Currently Run a Furnace or a Boiler?

If you already have a furnace, your home’s ductwork is prepared for your system to be replaced with another furnace. If you have a boiler, the copper piping will work with another boiler. It’s much more cost-effective to stick with the same heating method than to convert the heat-distribution system.

Do You Have a Manufacturer Preference?

If you were satisfied with your old equipment (or if you weren’t!), take note of the brand name. Let our technicians know! While they are experts at equipping your home with an excellently manufactured heating system, they are always happy to accommodate your home comfort equipment requests.

How Much Heating Capacity Do You Need?

A larger furnace or boiler can heat more zones (or floors) of your home. A small apartment may only need the furnace or boiler capacity for one zone, while a large home may need the capacity for two or three. If you’re not sure, contact our energy experts for a consultation!

Consider Your Fuel Source & Efficiency

Do you currently use oil or gas to heat your home? Our technicians will install a heating system that uses the same fuel. In fact, our techs are skilled in installing heating oil, natural gas, and propane heating systems to accommodate your individual heating fuel preferences. With your new heating system in place, its improved efficiency is going to make a significant impact on lowering your annual fuel bills.

Brainstorm Other Necessary Upgrades

Leverage your buying power by upgrading multiple systems at the same time. When you get a new heating unit, consider a new central AC or ductless cooling system. This will promote better overall energy efficiency, helping you save more in the long run. Though the weather outside may be cooling down, it’s never too early to begin preparing your whole home for your complete comfort year-round. Plus, some mini-split ductless AC systems can also provide supplemental heating in the wintertime, making them invaluable to Central PA residents in every season.

Our plans help alleviate your high winter heating bills, decreasing stress and allowing you to enjoy each season even more. What Is a Fuel Budget Plan?

Choosing price protection for your annual supply of heating oil adds predictability to your fuel costs and often saves you money while adding convenience. Plus, these plans will help our customers protect their wallets from unexpected changes in fuel prices by either capping their maximum heating oil price at today’s market price, allowing customers to split their payments throughout the year, or purchasing their fuel during the off-season. W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. loves keeping your Central PA home a safe and comfortable place for your family. Our customer base has a wide range of preferences for their home heating budgets, so we’ve developed three separate pricing plans to give you options when paying for your fuel.

Question: What are the benefits of Fuel Pricing Plans?

Answer: Rather than having your energy bills hit all at once in the two or three coldest months, pick one of our plans to help you manage your bills and find a more effective, worry-free way to provide warmth and comfort all year round. We offer three different pricing plans: a Budget Plan, a Pre-Buy Plan, and a Price Cap Plan.

Question: How does a Fuel Budget Plan work?

Answer: Spread your fuel payments evenly throughout the year with a budget plan from W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc.. Choose this plan to evenly distribute your fuel costs throughout the year for a predictable, easy-to-manage monthly payment.

How It Works:

  • We estimate the amount of fuel that your home will use throughout the year based on previous years’ usage, predicted weather, and home preferences.
  • We take the total amount of fuel and divide it by 11 months. This new number is your monthly fuel payment for the year.

To make this plan even better for you, we let you choose if you’d rather be a will-call or automatic delivery customer.

Question: What is the Ready Reserve Pre-Buy option?

Answer: Rather than taking a gamble on winter fuel rates that almost always go up during the peak winter months, save more by purchasing your fuel during the off-season. These lower rates save you money and ensure that you have your guaranteed fuel supply all winter.

How It Works:

  • We estimate your anticipated annual fuel usage based on previous years’ usage, weather conditions, and home preferences.
  • We find the lowest price from our suppliers and order the number of estimated gallons your home needs. This price is generally 5¢–10¢ less than traditional on-demand delivery prices.
  • To guarantee our low rates, you pay for all of your fuel up front while we store your fuel for you for the entire heating season.

This program runs from August 15th to May 31st. Get the best value for your dollar this winter. and enroll in an W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. Ready Reserve program today!

Question: What is a Price Cap Plan?

Answer: Price Cap Plan, you will never pay more than the predetermined price per gallon. A cap price sets a ceiling, or cap, on how high your price can go. It also protects you if prices go down; anytime our daily cash price is below the ceiling, you pay the lower price.

Question: How does the Price Cap Plan work?

Answer: The W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. Price Cap Plan is currently only available for heating oil customers. The plan runs from August 1st to April 30th each year. A program fee applies. Enroll to set your price cap today.

How It Works:

  • When enrolling, you sign up to receive your fuel for a predetermined price per gallon. You are guaranteed not to pay a higher price per gallon all winter.
  • If the price of heating oil per gallon drops below your predetermined price, you pay the LOWER PRICE—the market price of heating oil.
  • If the price of your fuel per gallon goes above your predetermined price, you CONTINUE to pay the previously agreed-upon price per gallon.
  • You never pay over the capped price.

Question: Why is there a fee for the Price Cap Plan?

Answer: We can’t cover this cost on our own. Our suppliers charge us a fee, and we pass this fee on to our customers. We make no profit from the fee. The amount we charge you is our cost and is subject to change annually.

Question: How long does my Price Cap protection last?

Answer: Your price cap will remain in effect from August 1st to April 30th each year. Because we make a commitment to our fuel suppliers for this protection, you must sign a contract when you choose a price cap. Please contact us to sign up or if you have any questions.
