Top Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Heating System
During the winter in Central Pennsylvania, your heating equipment is not only responsible for keeping things cozy, but its performance also affects your household spending. Today, high-efficiency heating systems have proven their value in operation, safety, and cost savings. With warmer weather around the corner, now is the time to reflect on how your heating system performed this year. How can you tell when it’s officially time to retire your existing system for a newer model? Read this blog from W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. to find out.
Top Reasons It Is Time For An Upgrade
Strange Noises or Smells
Over the heating season, if you heard abnormal humming, banging, or clunking coming from the furnace or boiler, or experienced strange odors, it may be time to upgrade your system.
Uneven Heating
If you noticed that your heat was unable to effectively reach all areas of your home equally, that can indicate the decline of your equipment’s operation capabilities.
High Energy Bills
Did you have to deal with sky-high heating bills this past winter? If the weather wasn’t too extreme, and your household size didn’t increase, your system is likely experiencing decreased fuel economy.
Dusty or Dry Air
Would you say the air in your home felt comfortable, or was it dry and dusty? Poor humidity regulation can be a result of an ineffective heating system. While regular maintenance will improve this, over time, a replacement is the best solution.
Increased Repair Frequency
Did you have to shell out a lot of money on heating repairs this year? Upgrade your system, and you’ll surely save money next year with a new, fully functional, high-efficiency heating system.

No-Heat Checklist for Propane and Oil Heat Users
1. Ensure that your thermostat settings are correct, and the batteries are fresh.
Double check that your thermostat has batteries and has the function set to “auto” or “heat.” The thermostat will also need to be set above the current temperature of the home.
2. Check that no breakers have been tripped, and all emergency switches are on.
Sometimes, electrical issues occur, and breakers are tripped for safety. Ensure that your furnace or boiler’s breaker is on. Red emergency switches should also be on—these can most often be found at the top of your basement stairs and on your heating unit itself.
3. If you heat with oil or propane, verify that you have fuel by checking your tank gauge.
Your oil or propane tank has a small round sight glass that houses the tank gauge. Check to ensure that you have at least 1/4 of a tank of oil and at least 30% of a tank of propane. If not, call W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. for a delivery.
4. Press your heating system’s red reset button one time only—more can be dangerous.
You should see a reset button on the side of your heating system, whether it’s a furnace or a boiler. Press it one time only to see if your furnace or boiler can be reset. If you press it once and it doesn’t work, call W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc., so we can assist you.

Prepare your property for winter deliveries.
Expecting winter fuel deliveries? Make sure the path to your fuel tank fill pipe and driveway are clear of ice and snow. It also is beneficial to trim back any low-hanging branches to help us deliver any last-minute oil orders safely and efficiently. Plus, throwing down some ice melt on your driveway will keep you and our drivers safe.
Seal windows and doors to keep heat inside.
Holding a candle to your windows and doors can uncover any sneaky drafts, as the candle will flicker, and smoke will be affected by the subtle airstream. If you find draftiness, seal any air leaks with caulk or weather stripping. This will keep your precious heat inside where it belongs.
Winterize your plumbing.
Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your home plumbing without proper preparations. Luckily, our W.C. Eshenaur & Son, Inc. plumbing department can help with all your plumbing problems, no matter how large or small!
